This is an excerpt from the chapter book for children, Shy Sharon. The book is autobiographical except Bashful Betty changed her name to Shy Sharon in the book. This excerpt is the chapter about her salvation at the age of 5. The family moved once again. The new town had no church, so Daddy decided to start one. The family began having services in their home. Daddy soon found a small store and rented it. The pastor’s family lived in the rooms in the back of the store, and they had church in the store. Before long it would not hold all the people. They had grown from the pastor’s family and a few others to over 80 people. They borrowed a tent and set it up across from the store building. Sharon loved the tent. There was always a breeze and it was so cool inside. In every service there were people who went to the altar and were saved. Sharon had never given her heart to the Lord. She wondered what it was like. She saw the happy faces on the people after they had prayed. Wow! Look at them. When they went down, they looked so sad and some were even crying, but just look at them now. I wonder how that feels to pray and ask Jesus into your heart. Am I too young? Would I be different after I give my heart to Jesus? One night as Daddy was preaching, Sharon began to realize she needed to ask Jesus into her heart. She decided to go to the altar with the others and see what would happen. When daddy asked people to come and pray, Sharon sneaked down to the far end of the altar and bowed her head. No one came to pray with her. “I guess they think I am just hiding my face because I am so shy. But I know what I want. I want Jesus to come into my heart,” Sharon said to herself. She began to talk to God. "Am I too little to be saved? Lord, I want you to come into my heart and live inside me. I want to feel what others are feeling. I give you my heart and my life right now.” Suddenly Sharon began to feel a warm pouring as if someone were dumping warm molasses on her head. It felt as if it were oozing from her head all the way down to her toes. She looked around to see who was doing that, but there was no one there. “Lord, what a wonderful feeling. No wonder the people’s faces are beaming after they have prayed to you. Will you make my face shine like theirs?” Somehow Sharon knew without a doubt that she was saved and that Jesus had come into her heart. When she lifted her head, everything looked so different. She felt like she truly belonged to Jesus. She couldn’t keep the beaming smile off her face. Sharon looked around, but no one was watching except Mama. She ran to Mama and hugged her and told her what had happened, but her mom was not really listening. “Mama, I just got saved.” “That’s good sweetheart.” "But Mama, I asked Jesus into my heart.” “Ok. Now run along. I need to pray with Sister Green right now.” Sharon walked back and sat in the chair. “Mama thinks I’m too little, but I know what I feel. I am saved. Jesus lives in my heart and He always will from now and forever. No one is going to tell me I am too little any more, so there.” Thank you, Jesus, for caring about me. I know I am little, but I know what just happened to me. No one will ever convince me this is not real. You are real in my heart. First Post! 02/21/2010
